What is Astigmatism?
I get this question on a daily basis from my patients. So today, I am setting out to inform you on everything you need to know about Astigmatism and how to treat it.
Astigmatism has a lot to do with the cornea and the shape of the cornea so if our cornea is a little bit more basketball shaped, that means it's pretty much spherical. If it's a little more egg shaped or football shaped then the up and down of the cornea may be a little sharper curved or our side to side a little sharper curved than the other meridian. That means light is focused at two different places on the back side of the eye, creating a little bit more of a blur and that blur is called Astigmatism.
How do you know if you have Astigmatism? You would probably have a little bit of blurry vision. You may have a little bit of shadowing, which is a common complaint.
Often people ask what can be done about Astigmatism? Chances are it's never going to go away. It's always going to be part of your prescription. But there are a couple of things we can do. Including glasses and contact lenses. Another way we can treat it is LASIK. Depending on how much Astigmatism you have in your vision LASIK is often an option.
If you have any other questions or concerns about Astigmatism, don't hesitate to ask!
